Each discusses why the natural resource is important, what is happening to endanger it, and what can be done to protect it, both on a large scale and individually. The easy-to-read texts are interspersed with mediocre-to-poor quality black-and-white photographs. Glossaries include pronunciation guides for difficult words. The ``What Can You Do?'' sections are especially helpful to young readers as they provide practical suggestions. In Water, for example, Greene advises, ``Don't let the water run while you brush your teeth'' and ``Take short showers.''
