Similar in style and organization to his Water: the Next Great Resource Battle (Macmillan, 1982), this one explores the new scientific field of ecological restorationrenewing polluted or damaged land or water. Through outstanding examples, each chapter describes attempts to bring marshes, grasslands, forests, rivers, and lakes as close as possible to their natural states while promoting native flora and fauna. Frustrating problems, such as erosion and pollution, or intrusions by alien plants or feral animals, are confronted and solved, or at least temporarily halted, by occasionally unusual or unexpected means. It is unfortunate that the black-and-white photos lack contrast and do not provide visual interest. Repairing our damaged earth is a huge enterprise, concisely examined here through thought-provoking models of sometimes successful, other times partially productive, struggles to heal our planet's wounds or soften its scars.
