PreSchool-Grade 2-- Ideally, every child should have access to a large, lovely anthology of classic poetry to pore over, dip into, and return to lovingly through the years, savoring its imagery and reveling in the music of its words. Fortunately there are far better collections in print and in libraries from which to choose. There are, to be sure, a few classics here: Field's "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod," Lear's "Owl and the Pussy-Cat," selections from Robert Louis Stevenson, Christina Rossetti, Lewis Carroll--all of which are readily available in any number of good anthologies--but the entries for the most part are pedestrian and completely forgettable. The oversized format and generous design have pretensions of grandeur ("an heirloom edition") and feature the work of a dozen or so illustrators, all of which has a distinct greeting-card look to it. Garish colors, overly cute animals, and an excessive use of butterflies and rainbows are a few of the aesthetic offenses. Access to the poems is restricted to a title-only contents page or flipping through the collection. No child is going to be enriched or feel rewarded by this meager treasury.

Lacking a distinctive style--and somewhat short on originality, the poems and illustrations in this book have a familiar, mass market look. Representing the work of a number of artists, cloying paintings of rainbows, puckish nineteenth-century fairies and round-faced children wearing nightcaps share space with nicely rendered nature drawings. Egan's selection relies almost entirely on frequently anthologized poems by such authors as Christina Rossetti, Edward Lear and Robert Louis Stevenson; many are lackluster verses attributed to Anonymous. Compared to the lively and substantive Imaginary Gardens , Sing a Song of Popcorn or Side by Side (all recently published), this large-format addition to the rapidly increasing roster of poetry collections contains few treasures. All ages.
