It's now time to turn your attention to an entirely new concept of family. . . .The new responsibility of children equals an exponential explosion of daily tasks: mounds of laundry, bushels of shopping for food and other stuff, preparing many meals for a diverse range of tastes, cleaning up after it all, chauffeuring people to and fro, planning events and schedules, maintaining the care of a pet or two. Then factor in time to yourself, time with your friends, romance with your partner, personal goals or interests—how will you ever juggle all this? The key is to approach the family not as a set of separate individuals pulling in twelve different directions, but as members within a group who all really do want to arrive together at the same destination. The Eliums teach us how to distinguish between the service-oriented environment of work, where energy is focused on a single goal or outcome, and the care-oriented environment of family, where there are multiple issues that need attention. When faced with conflict you will learn to ask, "What does this group of people need, including me?"—a questioning process known as FamilyMind.

Review:
Although this is a book for parents, it is not a book that is limited to child rearing. Instead, this is a manual for personal growth within the family unit. "The real purpose of family is to build relationships that support who we truly are," according to co-authors Jeanne and Don Elium. This remarkable duo has crystallized the family challenges of the '90s: maintaining jobs as well as intimacy; letting go of our misguided '50s nostalgia and outdated sex roles; fanning the flames of marital love; and listening to the soul-calls of parents as well as children. Their advice is fresh, solid, often poetic, and sure-fire, family-tested.
About the Author:
DON ELIUM is a marriage, family, and child counselor in private practice. He works extensively with men and women in recovery from the post-traumatic stress of childhood abuse with a special interest in healing the wounds of father/daughter relationships.
As a transpersonal education and workshop leader, JEANNE ELIUM challenges parents to put aside limiting stereotypes and gender roles in order to see their child through a wider lens. Both Jeanne and her husband Don are known for their powerful seminars that have brought healing to thousands of individuals and families.
