This work describes what is currently known about violence in institutions and presents the rationale, content and evaluation of an effective staff training programme designed to reduce this problem. The premise here is that assaults are often the product of staff-patient interactions rather that patient pathology per se. Since staff members may at times inadvertently cause assaultive behaviour, they can also learn how to avoid it. Part One presents a concerted effort to understand the aetiology of institutional violence. It discusses the problem in different settings, both psychiatric and correctional, and describes characteristics of perpetrators, victims, and assault-prone environments. Part Two describes in detail the Controlling Assaultive Behaviour Course developed by the authors, while part Three provides advice on how to implement the effective techniques presented.
