About the Author:

James R. Schultz is a native of Northwest Pennsylvania. He entered Harvard Business School in the fall of 1941 and was there when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7. He was commissioned an Ensign in April 1942 and in May left to attend a sixty day Midshipmen's training program at Northwestern University. The Long Way Home is the story of his wartime experience.

The Navy had given us minimal training and thrown us into the fray with the expectation that we could cope. By and large we did. As we looked around we saw all of the others coping, so it didn't seem unusual for a 25-year old to be commanding a multi-million dollar ship with a crew of 72 men.
