From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 2 Flowing language follows the dips and bends of a river canoe trip. The quiet text relates riding through rapids; observing deer, raccoon, and other wildlife; the sun setting and the moon rising over shimmering water; and finally returning home in the moonlight. The earth tone and blue watercolor illustrations perfectly capture the dreamy mood and the majesty of nature. The light application of watercolor allows light to shine through, giving the water, sky, and landscape a luminous quality. The bleeding edges create a misty softness that also gives the shore landscape a feeling of distance. However, the changing point of view in the illustrations is disconcerting. At times readers are observing the trip from the shore, occasionally they are in the canoe, and once it appears that they have an aerial view. This is a serious flaw in an otherwise lovely mood piece, because it interrupts the flow of the pages while children try to orient themselves to a new point of view. Vera Williams' Three Days on a River in a Red Canoe (Greenwillow, 1981) is a more practical, less romantic, and generally more realistic trip. Karen Radtke , Milwaukee Public Library
