As Mother Theresa has been to the poor of Asia, so Dom Helder Camara has been to those of Latin America. As Roman Catholic Archbishop of Olinda and Recife from 1964 until 1985, he has not only served the poorest parts of his own country, he has also served the poor everywhere with his forceful articulation of their plight and with his writings. Through the Gospel, however, is Dom Helder's first attempt in print at exegesis. As such, the book is sometimes uneven in its style and of varying depths.The text is drawn from an extended series of telecasts conducted with Dom Helder for French television by Roger Bourgeon. The format for the television shows became the format of the book: a brief section of scripture drawn from the gospels and arranged chronologically from the life of Christ becomes the basis of the Dom's commentary. In some sections, Mr. Bourgeon still appears as interviewer and probes Dom Helder for more detail. In other sections there is no interviewer intervening, only the Bishop himself speaking. It is in these latter sections where the depths of Dom Helder's devotion and understanding best show themselves.It would be hard for any Christian today to function without some knowledge of Dom Helder Camara, and Through the Gospel is certainly as candid and sympathetic an introduction to the man and his work as anyone could ever hope for. -- From Independent Publisher
