If you're serious about putting together an elk hunt, this is the book for you. Jim Zumbo's new tome covers the breadth of elk hunting, and aside from the chapters you'd expect on rifle/cartridge selection, calling and the like, the author offers extensive advice on planning and executing an elk hunt. There's a terrific overview of western elk states, complete with color maps showing public land. -- Peterson's Hunting, July 2005

With full colour photography throughout, this book will hold a prime spot on your bookshelf. -- BC Outdoors Hunting & Shooting, 2004
Zumbo, the longtime hunting editor for Outdoor Life magazine has written what may become the Bible for elk hunters. This man lives in the west, hunts in several states and Canadian provinces for elk, and it's what he is best known for... well, elk hunting and a tremendous store of hard earned knowledge about hunting other species. It's easy to tell when someone is writing about their favorite topic: the skill and know how shines like a beacon. Zumbo comes by his knowledge by having degrees in forestry and wildlife biology. He knows what makes elk tick, and why and when they do some of the things they often do. This book is filled with not only historical facts but the how-to and where-to information hunters need to plan a western elk hunt. He covers elk biology, where to hunt them, planning a hunt, how to hunt elk on a budget, firearms and muzzleloaders, optics, bowhunting and other gear, calls and calling, seasons, hunting the backcountry, how to avoid getting lost, and a very interesting chapter titled: Trophy bull or easy elk?... Zumbo should be called Mr. Elk. He knows how to hunt these animals at almost any altitude, and his advice is clear and understandable. He can help make any hunting a success by reading and studying this book. It has all the tips and tricks one needs to shoot an elk. Beautiful color photos grace this hardcover book, and it's one you'll need when planning a hunt. -- David Richey, The Outdoor Review; August 10, 2004
