From the Back Cover:

Famous Firsts of Black Women is an encyclopedia of inspiring women in black history. It contains the stories of twenty heroines from the fields of arts, politics, business, education, sports, and civil rights. Some of the women featured are Rosa Parks, civil rights activist; Harriet Tubman, freedom fighter; Wilma Rudolph, Olympian; and Shirley Chisholm, politician. The variety and significance of these women make this book required reading for students of American history at any age.

Because of Plowden's effort, American history will be greatly enriched, and finally, black women will begin to take their rightful place as important figures in the development of this country. I would highly recommend [Famous Firsts] to all secondary history teachers, all students of history--both young and old--and to teens, in general.

--Teaching K-8

If anyone still ignores the triumphs of unsung black heroines, resolve to edify yourself with this book.
--Southern Pines, North Carolina's The Pilot

(A) serviceable addition to any collection.
