Doyle's artistic re-interpretations are contemporary but offer a wide variety of style and mood. The ``whiffling Jabberwock'' and Father William (with an eel on the end of his nose) are reminiscent of the original Tenniel drawings, while the Aged Man hunting for haddocks' eyes is rather surreal. ``Turtle Soup'' is offered as an inviting still life, but the rattlesnake and the garden door of ``Gardener's Song'' are wholly representational. The colors are always vibrant, and the sometimes bizarre appeal of the illustrations is a complement to the poet's sense of the absurd.
