Humanity is alienated from the reign of God, from God's call and vision for us as creation. Humanity has fallen from the freedom for love to the bondage of self-protection at whatever cost to others or to self-hatred at the cost of distortion of the self. We serve the powers of death also and not least in our drive quest for "prosperity" (cf. The Great Litany, Book of Common Prayer, p. 149, Lutheran Book of Worship, p.170). Humanity is captive to false gods, heteronomous powers, religious or secular; or it is captive to equally false autonomy, seeking to be a law unto itself. The church recognizes that in the last analysis sin is not so much misbehavior as it is misbelief, faith, and trust directed toward that which is other than God's redeeming reign, resulting in both groundless arrogance or groundless despair. Such misbelief or misdirected orientation means that the whole of our existence, not just individual acts, is guilty existence, existence under condemnation.
