As coordinator of outreach services at the Great Plains Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center in Peoria, Illinois, Flegel annually assisted coaches at some 15 schools in providing first aid for their athletes. Her roles as the center's educational program coordinator and American Red Cross CPR instructor gave her firsthand experience in helping coaches become proficient first responders.
Flegel, a certified athletic trainer, received a master's degree in physical education from the University of Illinois in 1982. A member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, she has been a reviewer for the association's journal, Athletic Training, and a member of the Illinois Athletic Trainers Association Clinic and Industrial Trainers Committee. She is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. In her leisure time, Flegel plays volleyball, squash, and softball and enjoys photography and drawing.
