PreS-Gr 2A very basic explanation of the possible permutations a family may go through as parents divorce, remarry, have more children, etc., as seen through the eyes of the oldest child. The people are represented by basic geometric shapes in a variety of bright colorsmother, father, stepmother, stepfather, stepsister, stepbrother, dog, cat, etc. The text emphasizes changes and implies the necessity of adjusting to them. The book ends as the child himself changes by graduating, getting married, and deciding to make a new family. Because the people are generic, the characters lack individuality and this sometimes causes confusion. For instance, in the graduation picture, a girl is added to one of the familiesas stepsister? Girlfriend? Stepmothers sister? And in the following picture, she becomes the bride of the narratoreven more bewildering. However, the book takes a difficult and common childhood experience and reduces it to its simplest terms, at the same time showing the two families amicably attending family functions together. Best used on a one-to-one basis where discussion could follow.Judith Constantinides, East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA
