Much of the writing from the Carter years now is dated and pedestrian, and the conscious effort to modernize the text becomes awkward. Further, though the author's profound appreciation of 20th-century Southern letters is keenly felt, his chatty anecdotes, odd personal reading whims, and bemusement over the popular culture (akin to his own English life) finally succeed better than do his too pat critical assessments.
