Since the 1970s, according to the U.S. census, immigration has accounted for one out of four persons added to the U.S. population. Mexican-Americans constitute the largest single component of the new wave of immigration. What are the effects of immigration by people of Mexican origin on the economic, educational, social, political, and linguistic systems of the United States? Answers to this question are explored in thirteen papers. The results presented here illuminate the key issues that dominate current immigration debate by relating the immigration experience of other countries and societies to the experience of the United States. They also clarify some common misconceptions about Mexican-Americans and provide new vantage points from which to assess public attitudes and immigration policy.
