Grade 2-6 The end products pictured here bear little resemblance to the space machines and creatures of Star Trek or Star Wars. Imaginative youngsters should enjoy duplicating West's creations nonetheless. The various projects use readily available materials to produce colorful and, in most cases, truly ``far out'' designs. Third graders should be able to follow the clearly written and illustrated directions on their own, while younger children will be able to construct many of the figures with help reading the instructions. The projects are reminiscent of those in West's Paper Circus (Carolrhoda, 1983), although those were clearly representational of real-world circus people and animals. These are very much like the projects in the Blocksmas' Easy-to-Make Spaceships That Really Fly (Prentice-Hall, 1983) and in Build Your Own Space Station (Watts, 1985). West's spaceships are more elaborate than the Blocksmas', and the illustrations are easier to follow. The Watts book has rather sketchy instructions and relies heavily on the sequential illustrations, which are not always detailed enough to carry that burden.
