Among the effects of James McNeill after he died in Ayr, Scotland, in 1964 was a collection of 130 letters from sons and friends of David and Ann McNeill, who had immigrated to Utah and elsewhere in the United States between 1853 and 1872. The letters in the McNeill-Thompson collection in the archives of the University of t. Andrews are but a small sampling of the letters that must have been sent by the 5,000 Scots who became Mormon immigrants in the nineteenth century. However, these letters transcend common stereotypes in that they expose a variety of personalities and experiences.
