Review:
The Joys & Oys of Parenting is accessible and informed by both child and development and Jewish perspectives. At any stage of parenting, parents will appreciate both the kernels of wisdom and the reassurance that they are not in it alone. --Stephanie Fink, Union for Reform Judaism, Associate Director of Engaging Families with Young Children
The collaborative work of Maurice Elias (Professor of Psychology at Rutgers University), educator and author Marilyn E. Gootman, mother and communications expert Heather L. Schwartz, The Joys and Oys of Parenting draws on the tradition of Jewish wisdom as well as the expertise of these three child development professionals to offer practical ideas, advice, and inspiration for parents. Of special note are the chapters on maintaining a peaceful home, establishing routines, fostering resilience, promoting responsibility, sparking motivation, nurturing kindness, and cultivating gratitude, which emphasize being mindful of the joys involved in parenting while helping our children learn to live with integrity. Enhanced with the inclusion of an informative Foreword by Rabbi Kerry Olitzky, "The Joys and Oys of Parenting" includes a ten page Discussion Guide, a four page listing of References, and a three page list of the authors credentials in detail. While very highly recommended for community and academic library Parenting instructional reference collections in general, and Family Relationships supplemental studies reading lists in particular, it should be noted for personal reading lists that The Joys and Oys of Parenting is also available in a Kindle format. --The Midwest Book review
