The author, who has worked for the National Park Service and the Smithsonian, attempts to translate her interpretive skills as a tour guide into an introductory text. Focusing mainly on Hopi, Navajo, and Spanish colonial reactions to nature, she draws the reader into a complex maze of visual and textual references, treating her principal chapters as narratives running from the winter to autumn seasons. While this approach is typical of many descriptive travel works, the resultant flow of information is not consistent but skips confusingly from one context to another. Only readers already knowledgeable about the region will be able to follow the unfolding portrait. Yet once the book's premise as an introduction has been diluted, it becomes something else entirely?a fascinating, beautifully illustrated journey that will be best understood by specialists and devotees of the Southwest's art and architecture.?Paula A.
