From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 3-An attractive collection of original stories and recipes loosely based on the months of the year. The 12 selections range from fantasy to folktale, from humorous to sweet. Some of them are quite charming-"Naming Astrid" and "The Nisse's Christmas" are gentle tales that please the palate. "The Nasty Witch" is just scary enough to whet the appetite for Halloween fare. Others are stilted or silly-"The Big Purple Spider" and "Flower Fairy" are hard to swallow. The recipe for "Beggar's Magic," a version of the classic folktale "Nail Soup," doesn't include the nails. The title story, too, needs flavor. Recipes range from easy snow cones or raspberry jam, to complicated troll chicken or strawberry cake. Most of them require adult help and a well-stocked kitchen. A brief note sharing Norwegian traditions for each month concludes each selection. Eldridge's illustrations are soft, folksy, full-page watercolors with detailed borders and clever food-motif decorations. This is a pretty book that will appeal to those in search of monthly themes. However, the cooking directions may prove tricky, and some of the stories will leave listeners hungry. An additional purchase where there is a demand for Scandinavian material.
