About the Author:


Al Petitpas, EdD, is professor of psychology and director of graduate training at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. He has designed and implemented career development and transition programs for elite athletes, including the Career Assistance Program for Athletes (CAPA) for the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the Planning for Future Careers Program for the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). He also helped to create the NCAA Youth Education through Sports Program (YES).

Working in the area of career development for more than 20 years, Delight E. Champagne, PhD, has helped athletes at the college and professional level, including the USOC and LPGA. She is a professor of psychology at Springfield College where she coordinates the graduate preparation program in student personnel and teaches graduate-level career development courses.

Judy Chartrand, PhD, is an associate professor of psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University where she teaches courses in career development. In 1995 she received the Early Career Award from the American Psychology Association for her work in career development. She has consulted with the U.S. Olympic Team for CAPA.

Steven J. Danish, PhD, has worked with more than 100 Olympic athletes, helping them plan for life after sports. Danish was instrumental in designing the USOC program for athletes.
He is director of the Life Skills Center at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA.

Throughout his career, Shane M. Murphy, PhD, has helped hundreds of athletes with performance and personal concerns. He served as the sport psychologist for the USOC from 1987 to 1994. Murphy continues to work with athletes as a consultant and writes numerous articles and chapters on sport psychology.
