"Families at School: A Guide for Educators" describes this exemplary program from its early development and recruitment efforts through its current curriculum. The book includes background information on family literacy, suggestions for establishing a family literacy program, and ideas about program structure. Also included in this hands-on guide are sample lesson plans, lists of recommended books and resources, suggested classroom activities, examples of parents' work, and numerous student handouts. The book concludes with a discussion of assessment in the context of the family literacy program. Drawn from the authors' experience of what works with parents, these ideas and suggestions can be adapted for use in many program settings.
This guide stands on its own as a model for other family literacy initiatives. But this book also can be used with its companion volume, "Families at School: A Handbook for Parents," a practical resource full of ideas and activities for parents who hope to develop their own literacy as a means of helping them support and nurture their children. Both books will serve as valuable resources for educators implementing and developing family literacy programs.
