Harrison offers a feminist reinterpretation of the work of six Southern women writers: Ellen Glasgow, Margaret Mitchell, Willa Cather, Harriette Arnow, Alice Walker, and Sherley Williams. She examines how the strong sense of place evident in the writings of women authors coincides with their female characters' direct relation to the land itself. As such, these authors transcend the traditional boundaries of the pastoral novel to "re-vision" the literal and figurative Southern landscape. Harrison's discoveries may not be startling, but anyone brave enough to search for common themes in Margaret Mitchell and Alice Walker deserves attention. For academic libraries.
