About the Author:

Kisshomaru Ueshiba (1921-1999), the second Aikido Doshu, is regarded as a man who embodied the spirit of aikido as inherited from his father, aikido's founder. The third son of Morihei Ueshiba, Kisshomaru graduated from Waseda University in 1946 and became master of the Aikido World Headquarters in 1948. In 1967, he was named chairman of the Aikikai Foundation, the principal aikido organization in Japan and overseas. His formal appointment as successor to his father took place in 1969. He held several important posts related to the martial art and was a trustee of the Nippon Budokan, the "hall of martial arts" located in central Tokyo. He died in 1999. He is the author of A Life in Aikido and The Art of Aikido, and co-author of Best Aikido. He also wrote the introduction to Budo by Morihei Ueshiba.
