This catalog and its accompanying exhibition, to be held this summer at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, are part of the cultural exchanges between the United States and the Soviet Union that were planned following the 1985 Geneva summit. The 51 paintings in the exhibition come from the Hermitage and Pushkin museums. The essays in the catalog describe the development of the imperial court collections of French paintings and the development in the 19th and 20th centuries of the great private collections of French modernism, which were nationalized after the Revolution in 1918. The fine color reproductions are accompanied by notes on the artists and standard catalog entries describing the subjects and reviewing the scholarship. Other than documenting this exhibition and providing good color reproductions, From Poussin to Matisse is of only moderate interest.
