Taken from Chapter 3: Marine meals Most birds and animals can drink only fresh water. Marine birds, however, drink salt water every day. There is also a lot of salt on the fish they eat. Too much salt is unhealthy for any animal, so marine birds have a special way of getting rid of the salt they eat. They have salt glands near their eyes. These glands take the extra salt out of a marine bird's body. They make a salty fluid that leaks out of the bird's nostrils and runs down its beak. The dripping liquid causes the bird to have a constantly runny nose.
