Taken from Chapter 8: Plenty of Food We know how the settlers cooked their food, but where did they get it? There were no grocery stores or supermarkets in the early days. Fortunately for their settlers, food was all around them. They hunted and trapped animals and birds, caught fish in rivers and lakes, and gathered fruit from the forests. They also grew their own fruits, vegetables, and grain, and raised farm animals such as cows, pigs, goats, turkeys, and chickens.
