Taken from Chapter 2: The mountainous mainland Wherever you travel in mainland Greece, mountains are not far away. Over three-quarter of the land is covered with mountains. The Pindus range runs down the middle of the country, and the Olympus range lies along the east coast. In most places, the soil is thin and rocky, but between the mountains, in central and northern Greece, lie two large, fertile plains. Mountains divide the mainland of Greece into six main regions, called provinces: Thrace, Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus, Central Greece, and Peloponnese.
