Taken from Chapter 5: The sierra A land of variety The sierra region, made up of the Andes Mountains, stretches from north to south through the middle of Peru. The western and eastern slopes of the sierra are very different. The western slopes border the deserts of the costa and are hit by constant dry winds. The eastern slopes, on the other hand, border the Amazon rainforest and experience warm, humid weather. The area between the eastern and western edges of the sierra is filled with hills, valleys, forests, canyons and plateaus. Clear mountain lakes and roaring rivers can be found throughout this region. A vast, high-altitude plain called the Altiplano stretches across southern Peru and the neighboring country of Bolivia.
