Tough but caring, the character of Captain Eco is designed to appeal to young people who want to protect the environment. Based on 14 central green issues, this book which won the 1992 Earthworm Award also gives suggestions on how the reader can help.

From School Library Journal:
Grade 2-3-- A gaudy, indignant indictment of our destructive ecological practices in large comic-book format. Globe-headed, caped Captain Eco snags two ``standard'' young people and takes them on a tour through the evils of industrial, nuclear, and energy waste; automobiles; pollution; junk food (including meat); animal abuse; rain forest destruction; and overpopulation. The Captain points the finger of blame at ``bonehead'' capitalists and poor government policies alike, seasons his accusations with specific examples, and offers glib remedies--``The planet would be a lot better off if things were built to last, like they used to be.'' The hand-lettered text flows naturally through Nadler's many small, brightly colored cartoon panels; the pages are crowded, but not confusingly so. Captain Eco fades away at the end, leaving behind a simple program of action plus a list of addresses. A good, if strident, consciousness-raiser for younger readers, gateway to 50 Simple Things Kids Can Do to Save the Earth (Andrews & McMeel, 1990) and others. --John Peters, New York Public Library

From Publishers Weekly:
Captain Eco, a red-caped superhero whose head is a replica of the globe, escorts two children on an eye-opening tour of earth's environmental troubles. With the help of Nadler's witty, inventive cartoon art and Porritt's kid-targeted jargon, Eco explains how the planet's forests, fresh water, farmland and other natural resources are being wasted. No reader will escape the force of his blunt message: "If you destroy these things, you destroy yourselves." Balancing amusing asides and hard-hitting statistics, the author emphasizes the importance of relying on renewable energy sources, using "green" forms of transportation, reducing waste, recycling, eating nutritiously and preserving endangered animals. With its heavily illustrated, comic-strip format and fresh humor, this book will raise the ecological consciousness of even the most reluctant readers. Ages 8-up.
