"One day, when I was telling a poor Uzbek how to treat an ulcerated condition of his leg, a Bolshevist official, overhearing me, remarked that I must have studied medicine. Incautiously I replied that I had, and the same evening I was asked to step into the office of the manager of the bureau, where I found the local chief of police. The two men put me through a tremendous self-examination, and asked me the last place from which I had come. I told them, and then, for a cause I could never fully ascertain - for beyond my innocent desire to travel in the world of Islam on my way to Mecca there had been no other motive - I was made, on the instant, to board the train for Tashkent, and ultimately to Orenburg, where I would have lingered like others, or perhaps starved, had I not escaped to the Arab Sea."
