Translation of a broad survey of Renaissance, Mannerist, Baroque, and Rococo sculpture by four French authors, this volume is a companion to Sculpture: the adventure of modern sculpture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Rizzoli, 1986). Nothing aimed at the general reader and covering a similar span is in print. The four separate essays are well organized and well translated, and a useful list of artists and works illustrated completes the text. Half the 450 illustrations are in color, and many show the works of art in situ , although sizes are not given consistently. Recommended for general collections.
