This is a survey of the arts in Russia from the end of tsardom to 1937. It covers film, painting, writing, theater, architecture, etc. There is a great deal of information in textbook style, but perhaps the author has tried to cover too much. The format is unfortunate: the book is crowded, the print is small. There are no color plates; the arrangement of plates on the pages is busy and unattractive. The book may be useful for those seeking archival type photographs, but it is otherwise not recommended. Individual books on Russian painting, film, etc., will better serve public and academic collections. Hara Seltzer, NYPL
