In 1887, Charles Ora Card and a pioneer company of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints moved to southern Alberta. Church leaders had commissioned them to seek out a place in Canada where the Saints could find refuge from prosecutions related to the anti-polygamy Edmunds Act of 1882. The region's potential productivity, along with Church contracts and interests in irrigation and agricultural projects in the area, ensured continued official and non-official Mormon colonization well into the twentieth century. Today, more than a century later, over 100,000 members live in Alberta and British Columbia alone. A rich tradition of faith and service has accompanied the Church's remarkable growth in this region. Those who have lived there, including Hugh H. Brown and N. Elton Tanner, have left an indelible mark on the history of western Canada and the history of the Church. This collection of essays, written in honor of all the Saints who have lived in western Canada over the years, recounts some of the highlights of the Mormon experience in the region. Topics include the Alberta Temple, LDS women in southern Alberta, the Canadian Mormon Trail, the geography of Mormon colonization, the Mormons and irrigation; and Alberta Stake and Temple President Edward Wood. Thirteen historians contributed in the volume, including Elder Lynn V. Rosenvall, Richard E. Bennett, Susan Easton Black, Richard O. Cowan, and Richard Neitzel Holzapfel

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Corners a little bent but otherwise in great shape. ; Inspired by the 1996 sesquicentennial of the arrival of the Brooklyn, the ship that brought almost two hundred Latter-day Saints to the shores of the Golden State, California is an impressive addition to the Regional Studies series and has many interesting stories to tell. Since the arrival of those first Saints, California has witnessed important events in both national and Church history. The book's fifteen articles treat subjects as diverse as the march of the Mormon Battalion, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and the riots that erupted in Los Angeles following the Rodney King trial. ; 6" x 9"; 314 pages.
