Gr 4-8-This spare volume brimming with full-color photographs presents a bright but fleeting glance at this nation's vast area and its diversity of cultures. The geography, including land, seasons, plants, and animal life is covered in three pages; five pages are devoted to history. Government and the economy, people and lifestyle, language and literature, the arts, leisure and festivals, and food are also touched on in the overview section. The middle section, "A Closer Look at India," is a lively hodgepodge of information that includes Hindu deities and the Festival of Lights, Kashmir, the Indian game kabaddi, endangered tigers, Indian tea, and the Nehru-Gandhi Dynasty. A final chapter covers "Relations with North America." The map, showing only a few cities, rivers, and the outlines of the Indian states, is inadequate; a black-and-white, unlabeled, reproducible map is also included. A brief glossary and list for further reading are appended; however, the index is incomplete and not very useful. With its beautiful pictures and topical organization, this title could possibly supplement Sylvia McNair's India (Children's, 1990), which offers a detailed history, with religion, government, and cultural conditions introduced at appropriate times as well as a multipage summary of facts at a glance and a detailed map and gazetteer.-Steve Matthews, Foxcroft School, Middleburg, VA
