Grade 4-6-- The strength of this series entry is its photographs. Every double-page spread features five full-color photographs of different birds, with useful captions. Less successful is the text, which is a disjointed assortment of facts about different birds, with a paragraph or two per topic. Headings in bold type are coy--"Sweet for the Sweet," "Built for Killing," and "Smarty Birds"--making it difficult to flip through and pick out topics. The book is organized by habitat, from "Oceans and Seashores" to "Mountains and Arctic Tundra." Information on any one bird or subject is scant, and the index is limited to bird names.
