The wave of Italian immigrants who came to Chicago and settled on the city's West Side after 1890 could easily have been ignored by the established gentry. But the spiritual and material needs of these people touched a responsive chord in Mrs. William Amberg and a group of her friends, alumnae of the Academy of the sacred Heart on Taylor Street. This book, written by Mrs. William Amberg's daughter Mary, tells how these lay Catholic women began in 1898 a mission for immigrant Italians which by 1910 was hailed as the largest Catholic Sunday school in the world. The mission soon developed a night school for adults. Programs for young people multiplied; social services were added, so that by the time it moved to Loomis Street in 1922, Madonna Center had become a pioneer Catholic social settlement. This book is a personal history as told by Mary.
