The dynamics of power can affect people on political, social, and deeply personal levels. This newest volume in the Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices series examines these dynamics and asks readers to consider some difficult moral issues: How do we avoid the temptation to use power chiefly for our own advantage? How should bosses treat workers? Teachers treat students? Government treat citizens?
Jews of different ages and life experiences reflect on these and other ethical dilemmas in this cutting-edge new series from JPS. Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices offers a range of traditional and contemporary sources on Jewish attitudes toward power. Listen as rabbis, philanthropists, scholars, and social justice activists weigh in on how Judaism influences their own choices. Intended to promote dialogue, challenge assumptions, and reflect the reality of Jewish life today, Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices is for anyone who struggles to lead an ethical life and wonders about the range of informed Jewish responses to controversial questions.
Elliot N. Dorff is the co-editor of Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices: Body and Money, and author of three other JPS books on Jewish ethics: To Do the Right and the Good, Love Your Neighbor and Yourself, and Matters of Life and Death. Dorff is the chairman of the Committee of Jewish Law and Standards of the Rabbinical Assembly and serves on other national boards and committees dealing with Jewish ethics. He is currently Rector and Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the American Jewish University of Los Angeles.
Louis E. Newman is the John M. and Elizabeth W. Musser Professor of Religious Studies and director of Judaic Studies at Carleton College, the co-editor of Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices: Body and Money, and the author of Past Imperatives: Studies in the History and Theory of Jewish Ethics and An Introduction to Jewish Ethics, a college textbook.
