Anthropologist Chalfen's study of the extensive photograph collections of two Japanese American families over several generations grew out of an NEH grant project resulting in a traveling exhibition. Using his expertise in the rarely studied area of "home mode communication," Chalfen explores the cultural significance and communicative functions of the photograph albums of the Nagano family of Los Angeles and the Miyagawa/Uyeda family of Gallup, New Mexico. The result is an intriguing look not only at the personal histories of these two families, but the surprising similarities that emerge despite their disparate surroundings. Chalfen discovers common emphases on work, the group, and "endings" rather than beginnings--values more typical of Japanese rather than Euro-American people. He contends that amateur photography has now become the primary means for many families to record and transmit their cultural heritage to future generations.
