Stroup wrote many letters home between 1942 and 1945 while serving as chaplain to numerous units in the South Pacific. He insisted on following combat units into the field, a dangerous practice for a chaplain, and described many of the incidents that occurred as he offered comfort to the troops and held rites over burials. His thoughts during his time in New Guinea and the Philippines are candid, and his observations of the action are unflinching and thoughtful. The focus here is more on his Protestant faith than on military history, though he argues with himself over the subject of war with intelligence and honesty, accurately reflecting the tenor of the time. The editing by author (and Stroup's nephew) Richard Austin shows much reverence for the writer. This is unusual, affecting, and insightful fare.
