After a brief history and description of the disease, Donnelly gives the signs and symptoms and addresses the psychological aspects of the illness. She discusses the difficulties of diagnosis and treatment, warning about ineffective treatments. She also gives readers good advice on how to protect themselves and their pets. The chapter on "Lyme Disease and Teenagers" stresses the importance of reporting early signs to parents. Personal stories lead into each topic and create interest. Sean P. Mactire's Lyme Disease and Other Pest Borne Illnesses (Watts, 1992; o.p.) discusses other tick-borne diseases but there have been new developments since its publication. Scott Veggeberg's Lyme Disease (Enslow, 1998) covers the basic material adequately, but Donnelly explains it more clearly.
