About the Author:

David Elliott is the author of numerous books for children and teaches at Colby-Sawyer College. He attended New England Conservatory, where he studied classical voice. Unfortunately, hanging upside down did not cure his high notes. He lives in Warner, New Hampshire.

Hazel Nutt, dressed in a lab coat, tennis shoes, and with hair frizzed into a grand finger-stuck-in-light-socket look, sets about inventing a variety of weird monsters with the help of her young, two-headed assistant, Igor. Reaching into her cupboard, she pulls out Dracula's head and attaches it to an opera singer's body, creating Dracula-la-la. Of course, the townspeople are suspicious of Hazel's monster creations, and they grab their torches (despite the fact, as one kid points out, that flashlights were invented years ago), and they storm the laboratory. With help from another invention, Frankensteinway (a combination of piano and monster), Dracula-la-la puts on a recital that calms the crowd. The villagers depart with a promise not to storm the lab again. A bounty of visual jokes tucked into Kelley's scribbly, watercolor-washed art adds laughs to the inspired goofiness of the story.
