About the Author:

Ryan Ann Hunter is the pen name of Pamela D. Greenwood and Elizabeth G. Macalaster, who wrote this book together. They are the authors of Cross a Bridge, their first picture book for children. Pamela Greenwood lives in Mendham, New Jersey, and Elizabeth Macalaster lives in Westlake Village, California.

These collaborators (Dig a Tunnel, 1999, etc.) continue their series of inventive nonfiction, here explaining a bit about the history of flight and the variety of planes that people substitute for wings. For preschoolers infatuated with airplanes, the pages provide plenty of uncomplicated illustrations to peruse. Famous planes, such as the Wright brothers' Flyer, the Blackbird spy plane, and The Spirit of St. Louis share space with the more utilitarian vehicles, such as fire-fighting, crop-dusting, and mail planes. There are also examples of early flight machines, including the bulbous dirigibles and odd-looking wing-like contraptions that made flying more luck than art in times past. Miller's pictures make it easy for children to see the dashboard of a jet, or to imagine how engineers design planes of the future. Instructions for building a paper airplane and experimenting with its structure allow children an outlet for some flight engineering of their own.
