The text flows gently and is well paired with Leedy's soft renderings. The delightful illustrations are a departure from the cartoon style found in her other recent books. Here she uses colored pencils and lightly stylized figures to create warm family scenes. Unlike many books on this subject, this one portrays no negative feelings. It can be a good companion to Girard's You Were Born on Your Very First Birthday (Albert Whitman, 1983) which covers the physical aspects of the birth process. For children with mixed feelings, Alexander's When the New Baby Comes, I'm Moving Out (Dial, 1979) addresses anger and jealousy.
