Finally, the time is right for the bunyip to escape its prison--if Shelley will help. Although she is frightened by the malevolent creature, she knows that it should be free. Wignell has created an intriguing fantasy that capably combines the Australian aboriginal legend of the bunyip and a historic event, the Melbourne floods of February, 1972. Shelley is a likable, complex character, and her resourcefulness and tenacity allow her to solve an unusual problem. Escape by Deluge is reminiscent of Sarah Sargent's Watermusic (Clarion, 1986), another story in which a young girl assists an ancient creature escape from the plumbing.
