Gr. 4-7. In the Civil War series, the overall subject is divided into smaller topics to be explored in individual books. richmond traces the progress of the war in the east during the early years, emphasizing important conflicts such as the First Battle of Bull Run, the clash between the monitor and the Virginia, and the Battle of Antietam. Unhappy Country takes readers through the significant events of 1863, from the death of Stonewall Jackson to the fall of Vicksburg to the Battle of Gettysburg. Many easy-to-follow maps and clearly reproduced period photographs, engravings, drawings, and paintings (some in color) illustrate these well-designed books. Appendixes include time lines; source notes for the many quotations; selected bibliographies of sources; lists of recommended books, videos, and Web sites; and museums and battlefields to visit. The short sentences sound a bit choppy at times, but they make the subject accessible to a young audience. With clear writing and a highly visual presentation, this series offers an attractive introduction to the Civil War for middle-grade students. Carolyn Phelan
