From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-8 Of these three entries, Divided in Two is clearly the best of the lot. Arnold and Wiener have taken the very complex issue of why the war occurred and explained it in simple but not simplified terms. The language is clear and straightforward, making this one of the best introductions to the subject currently available. Life Goes On delves into the hardships that were faced by those on the northern and southern home fronts, covering the roles that women played in the war effort as well as in trying to maintain "normal" lives. However, the authors are overly ambitious in the amount of information they try to transmit, which results in too many lists of statistics. Unhappy Country focuses on the pivotal year of 1863, during which Stonewall Jackson lost his life and the South invaded the North as far as Gettysburg. By year's end, the Union had won key victories at Vicksburg and Chickamauga, and momentum had shifted in its favor. Although not as good as the first volume, this work still offers the same clear-cut explanation of the major events, as well as some interesting sidebars on several key people. All three titles have large, black-and-white and full-color photos and reproductions, and Divided and Unhappy have good maps. Many of the illustrations will be new to young people. -Elizabeth M.
