Gr 4-6--An introduction to the medieval craft of stonecutting, presented in an oversized format. After a discussion of church construction and stone masonry, Pernoud describes a day in the life of a fictional stonecutter who works at the Abbey of St. George in Normandy. The story is used as a vehicle to illustrate, and perhaps humanize, the life and craft of this particular vocation. Neither plot nor characterization is well developed, and a tree referred to as an oak in the text in no way resembles one in the illustration, but the daily events described and the colorful pictures of abbey life reinforce the opening discourse. Full-color illustrations and line drawings depicting and diagramming stonework, architectural detail, tools, and types of wall construction used during this period round out this series entry. In spite of the drawbacks of the weak story development, this book does show how a stonecutter worked during this period. Percy Watson's Building the Medieval Cathedrals (Cambridge Univ., 1976) has a wealth of information in much greater detail for more advanced readers.
