Principles of Catholic Moral Life - Hardcover
From June 17-21, 1979 William Cardinal Baum and the Archdiocese of Washington sponsored a workshop on Principles of Catholic Moral Life at The Catholic University of America. The present volume contains the papers given at that workshop.
The principal purpose of the work- shop and of this volume is to present a substantive and comprehensive introduction to the basic principles upon which the Christian way of life, as understood by the Roman Catholic Church, is based. A secondary but nonetheless significant purpose of both the workshop and of this volume is to offer considered and intelligent criticism of some recent developments in Catholic moral thought, in particular the development of a consequentialist methodology in the determination of the morality of human acts.
A key goal of the workshop and volume is to set forth as clearly and cogently as possible the principles of Catholic moral life that are in fact authoritatively proposed by the magisterium or teaching authority of the Church. The contributors to the volume recognize that there is an area in which dissent from authoritative Church teaching on moral issues is possible, but they reject the view that there can be legitimate dissent on questions of principles of the moral life. Several of the contributors likewise hold that the principles of Catholic moral life are not limited to generic precepts but include specific moral norms, such as the norm that one may not rightfully choose with direct intent to kill innocent human life or devastate entire cities with their populations.
It is our belief that the reader will find these essays informative, scholarly, intelligent, and intelligible. Together, they are of particular value to students of theology; indeed, any Catholic who is serious about understanding what the moral life is all about should be able to find in the essays presented here material for prayerful consideration.
